
Since 1907, Kiwi kids have been nourished by the indigenous stories, articles, poems and plays in the School Journal.
Published by Learning Media for the Ministry of Education, it is believed to be the longest-running serial publication for children in the world.
To celebrate one hundred years of publication of the Journal, Learning Media and the Ministry of Education planned the following activities:
- An exhibition at the National Library Gallery in Wellington, which ran from 23 April 2007 to 22 July 2007. Tailored versions of this also toured to Puke Ariki, New Plymouth from 22 September to 21 October 2007 and the Christchurch Centre of Contemporary Art, from 4-31 May 2008.
- A Nest of Singing Birds - 100 Years of the New Zealand School Journal, by Gregory O'Brien, was released in May 2007. The book is available at all good booksellers. For more information about the book, please phone our customer services team on (NZ) 0800 800 565 or email 100@learningmedia.co.nz
- Special centenary editions of Parts 1 - 4 of the School Journals, published in May 2007.
- A writing competition for students from Years 3 to 8, with winning entries published in the May 2007 centenary editions of the School Journal. The theme was "In A 100 Years Time..." We had over 1000 entries! The winners were:
- Brittany Dick - Richmond School, Nelson
- Wilson Cowie - Fendalton Open Air Primary School,Christchurch
- Maddy Ross - Maraekakaho School, Hastings
- Lucy Davy - Ponsonby Intermediate School, Auckland
- The School Journal was also celebrated at a special session at the Going West Literary Weekend 14-16 September 2007.
- Learning Media was gold sponsor of the New Zealand Reading Association conference in New Plymouth 23-26 September 2007, which also honoured the Journal's 100 years.
- The centenary year was crowned with a Montana Award for A Nest of Singing Birds in July 2008.
